Why the Ivory Silk Japanese Tree Lilac?
Ivory Silk Japanese Tree Lilac explodes in late spring or early summer with dozens of fluffy bunches of creamy white flowers that can measure as much as a foot long. They’re fragrant, too! Plant this small to medium-sized ornamental tree by your porch or patio and watch the pollinators go crazy. Ivory Silk Lilac Tree also makes a tough, low-maintenance street tree. In fact, in 1997 the Society of Municipal Arborists named it their “Tree of the Year” for its ability to cope with city life and to flourish without much TLC. You’ll get a lot of bang for your buck with this tree!
What do Lilacs and vaccinations have in common? The Greek word, syrinx. Meaning a hollow tube or pipe, the word was modified to become “syringe,” and it also serves as the root for Syringa, the botanical name for Lilacs. If you cut a Lilac branch, you will find a soft, pithy center that can be hollowed out to make a tube. Ivory Silk was developed at Sheridan Nurseries in Ontario, Canada. Ms. Olga Schultz, an office worker at Sheridan, won the company contest to name the new plant in 1973.
How to use in the landscape?
Tree Lilacs are just a wonderful addition to any garden. But if you want to truly experience the delightful fragrance of the Ivory Silk Tree Lilac be sure to plant it close to the house! Creamy-white flowers appear in summer amidst dark green foliage. Easy to grow!
How To Plant
Once established, Ivory Silk is one of the toughest flowering trees you’ll find. It handles winter temperatures down to -40°F and will still be the first tree in your landscape to leaf out in spring. The powdery mildew you find on your grandma’s Common Lilac? Not an issue with this one! Be sure to plant your Ivory Silk in a location with plenty of sunshine to ensure the best flower production!
How To Water
Water twice weekly for the first 3-5 weeks; then water weekly for the remainder of the year until winter. When you water, water slowly and thoroughly. Watering needs may be altered due to extreme weather conditions.
How To Fertilize
Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant Food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. If planting in the fall, use Elements Fertilizer while planting and start your regular annual fertilizing the following fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established as it gives your tree the nutrients it needs to produce lush new growth for the following spring.
How To Prune
Lilacs form their flower buds for the season on growth from the previous year, so for any annual or minor upkeep pruning, do this immediately after flowering. For any major structural pruning needed, be sure to do this in late winter, while your lilac is still dormant.

How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health.. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
