‘Perkins Pink’ (synonymous with ‘Rosea’) is an uncommon pink-flowered cultivar that was originally discovered in the 1930s at the Perkins Institute for the Blind, Watertown, Massachusetts.

Why the Perkins Pink Yellowwood?

Perkins Pink American Yellowwood is a graceful and refined tree that is just as at home on the grounds of grand, formal estates as it is in modest gardens with room for only a few (extra-special) trees. This medium to large ornamental/shade tree casts a dappled shade, and its roots grow deeply, making the area underneath its arching branches a wonderful opportunity for planting up with ferns, hostas, and wildflowers. (Don’t forget a place to sit!) The long chains of fragrant, pale pink flowers in early summer may remind you of Wisteria. Perkins Pink Yellowwood doesn’t bloom every year, but when it does, it paints an unforgettably romantic picture. American Yellowwood is native to many eastern and central U. S. States, though it is rather rare in the wild. In locations where it grew in our nation’s early days, settlers valued the hard wood for gun stocks and used the heartwood to make a yellow dye (hence the name “Yellowwood”). The bark covering Yellowwood Trees is smooth, gray, and beech-like and invites you to touch it. Found growing on the grounds of the Perkins Institute for the Blind in Watertown, Massachusetts in the 1930s. Although Perkins Pink Yellowwood doesn’t bloom every year, it does have another performance that is more reliable—its fall color. In early autumn, the bright green leaflets turn bright yellow, looking especially luminescent against the slate-gray trunks.

How to use in the landscape?

You'll want to plant Perkins Pink in an area where the chains of pink flowers can be enjoyed under the shade of this trees canopy. A medium to large ornamental shade tree, be sure that the location chosen to plant Perkins Pink offers lots of room for this tree to spread its branches and grow. How To Plant

Yellowwood prefers full sun and well drained soil. Awesome flower display and fall color. Avoid very wet or dry soils as well as windy exposed sites.

How To Water

Water twice weekly for the first 3-5 weeks; then water weekly for the remainder of the year until winter. When you water, water slowly and thoroughly. Watering needs may be altered due to extreme weather conditions.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.

How To Prune

Not much pruning work required. Prune as needed in early summer.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
