Why the Swamp White Oak?
Don't worry - you don't have to live in the swamp to grow Swamp White Oak! This adaptable native shade tree will grow almost anywhere space permits - even on the gritty streets of the city. It's so tough, in fact, that it's a past winner of the Society of Municipal Arborists' "Tree of the Year" award. Swamp White Oak is a majestic, long-lived legacy tree to plant as a priceless gift to your great-great grandchildren. This tree will also be a boon to your community in the role it will play in storm water mitigation, as well as to local wildlife in the countless species of insects, birds, and small mammals it will shelter and feed. Oh, and it's beautiful, too? It's a win-win-win!
How to use in the landscape?
A relatively large tree displaying large dark green leaves with gray-green undersides in summer, transforming into golden hues in fall. Swamp White Oak does tend to perform well in wetter/swamp-like locations (hence the name) but also does well in other soil types. Drought tolerant. An excellent choice for shade trees, lawn trees, specimen, or large park-like settings.

How To Plant
Oak Trees enjoy full sun planting locations. Swamp White Oaks are no different and can grow well in all soil types and where other Oaks may be limited by requiring more acidic soils, Swamp White is much more adaptable. Oaks may have an irregular growth habit while young, but in time will straighten out. Bower & Branch Swamp Whites are grown to have proper branching structure in place, your only need will be to remove lower limbs as desired for branching height. Generally we remove all limbs below 4/5' but you may choose to remove limbs to 6 or 7' as your tree grows to allow for mowing or picnicking. Follow Bower & Branch fertilizing best practiced to insure health and vigor. Swamp White is virtually pest free when given the care and feeding it needs to grow healthy and strong.
When planting your balled and burlapped Oak, dig the hole six inches wider than the root ball all the way round but do not dig your hole any deeper than the root ball. It is a good idea to actually to make the depth about two inches shallower than the root ball so the top of the root ball ends up slightly higher than the surrounding soil. Once the root ball is in the new hole, cut and remove any twine on top of the ball and dispose of it. Now pull the burlap on top of the ball back to expose the soil and tuck the loose burlap down the sides of the hole where it will decompose. Once you have added some organic material as needed and some Elements® Starter Plant Food to the soil to be used as back fill, you are ready to fill in the balance of your tree planting hole. Firm in the replaced soil and then add bark mulch two to three inches deep in a circle around your tree trunk. Be sure this circle is at least three to four feet in diameter. Once completed, water your new tree in thoroughly. Remember, you cannot over water your new tree on its initial watering.
How To Water
Water weekly for the first 3-5 weeks; then water weekly for the remainder of the year until winter. When you water, water very slowly and very thoroughly. The water needs to reach to the bottom of the root ball and that takes time. Watering needs may be altered due to extreme weather conditions.
How To Fertilize
Incorporate Elements® Starter Plant food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer start your annual fertilizing late that fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. If planting in the fall, start your regular annual fertilizing the following fall. Continue this for the next three fall seasons to get your tree well established.
How To Prune
Not much pruning work required, very low maintenance. Prune as needed late spring through early summer but make sure you do not prune after mid-summer. Remember to not prune maples in early spring, the sap can bleed excessively.

How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
